NEA's Read Across America The Gift of Reading

KNEA Reading Wranglers celebrate Dr. Seuss 100th Birthday!

Reading Wranglers in Emporia
Governor Sebelius reading session on Cox Communications
Across Kansas

Thousands and thousands of kids, high school students, teachers and community leaders became KNEA Reading Wranglers in honor of Dr. Seuss' 100th Birthday!  In every Kansas school district children read to each other and to adults and adults come to schools and read to children.

Emporia

Five of KNEA's official Reading Wranglers joined NEA Executive Committee Woman Carolyn Crowder, KNEA President Christy Levings and award-winning western author Don Coldsmith in celebrating NEA's Read Across America. The Wranglers were featured in a poster and did radio and newspaper interviews.

Pictured here are JR Williams, Lakin, Carolyn Crowder, Michelle Stueve, Olpe, Don Coldsmith, Joe Henry Macoubrie, Bluemound, and KNEA President Christy Levings. Seated are Amanda Guglemeyer, Lakin and Michelle Bartley, Emporia.

Over 410 students were read to at Riverside Elementary. That's a bucket of books!  The Wranglers introduced themselves and shared the names of their horses. Like in every school across the state, KNEA Reading Wranglers sang Happy Birthday, put on their reading hats and learned Dr. Seuss songs. The Wranglers also autographed Dr. Seuss books and KNEA posters to the delight of the children.

Here is a photo album from festivities at Riverside Elementary in Emporia.

Wrangle Up a Good Book Across Kansas

Besides the army of community people coming in to read, there were many special events to celebrate Read Across America. High school students dressed up (or not) and read to younger students. There were reading rodeos, parades and parties. Here are just a few of the celebrations:

In Topeka

Cox Communications invited the Governor to read to youngsters at Ross Elementary Schools in Topeka. The reading session was web-telecast to 127 schools throughout Kansas. The students each received a Dr. Seuss book and birthday cookies.

Dignitaries present included Merrill and Barbara Ross, for whom Ross Elementaryl is named. Mr. Ross was the first African American to become a principal after the famous Brown v. Board decision. Here a student introduces herself to Mr. and Mrs. Ross.

To culminate the festivities at Ross Elementary, KNEA President Christy Levings and Mr. Cat teach the children a song about Green Eggs and Ham.

In Salina

Congressmen Jerry Moran read to Emily Pezzola's class in Salina.

In Frontenac

FTA President Debbie Restivo sports "100" glasses while reading to kids. Activities included members of the KNEA Student Program from Pittsburg State University.

In Clearwater, students dressed up each day for Read Across America.

  • Monday--Kick Off Your Shoes and Read--Crazy Sock Day!
  • Tuesday--Hats Off to Reading/Hats Off to Seuss--Hat Day.
  • Wednesday--Buddy Up With a Good Book--Bring a stuffed animal.
  • Thursday--Read to Succeed--Dress as on occupation or what you'd like to be when you grow up.
  • Friday--Curl Up With A Good Book--Pajama Day.

It was a wonderful day, and in some places a week, to celebrate reading and Dr. Seuss 100th birthday. Here are more pictures from across the state.
