KNEA wins intellectual property rights issue at Kansas Supreme Court
The long-awaited decision in the Pittsburg State University/KNEA fight to bargain intellectual property rights was received from the Kansas Supreme Court. The high court concluded that neither state nor federal law preempts the subject of intellectual property from being included in negotiations. The case goes back to the Kansas Public Employee Relation Board.

Supreme Court Decision on School Finance - A Win
Kansas NEA is encouraged with the Kansas Supreme Court decision to help public schools close the resource gap. The Legislature is to double the amount of new dollars the state spends on public schools by July 1.
May 11 Supreme Court hearing on school finance bill
The Supreme Court has granted KNEA the right to file a Supplement to the original Amicus (friend of the Court) brief. Meanwhile, plaintiffs, defendants and interested parties are filing final written arguments in preparation for the May 11 Supreme Court hearing on HB 2247, the State Legislatures remedy to the High Court order to fund Kansas public schools.

Teacher License Fees Increased
Starting July 1 educator license fees will be $36 for the 2005-2006 school year. The fee has been $24 since 1986.

Legislators return to Topeka for a June 22 special session. "There is no time for name calling and finger pointing. School starts in less than eight weeks. We have 466,000 students whose education is riding on state lawmakers' ability to behave responsibly, to come back to Topeka and do the right thing in a timely fashion," KNEA President Christy Levings said.
Bob Corkins is new Education Commissioner
The Kansas State Board of Education voted to name Bob L. Corkins as Commissioner of Education, replacing Andy Tompkins who retired in June. Corkins is a lobbyist who has championed school vouchers and limiting growth in education spending.
State Board, Attorney General try end run on Supreme Court?
Following two hours in executive session, the State Board today voted 6-4 to certify state funds already appropriated to maintain operation of schools from August, 2005 - January, 2006.

Don't Forget About That Tax Deduction
Thanks to intensive lobbying by the NEA, there's good news on the tax front. Congress has extended the $250 tax deduction for out-of-pocket classroom expenses incurred by teachers and paraprofessionals for the 2004 and 2005 tax years.
