NEA RA 2005:  A Photo Review

Below is a selection of digital photos shared with us by delegates at the 2005 NEA RA in Los Angeles.  For more information about the RA, contact Christy Levings (President) or Blake West (VP).

KNEA delegates began work each day of the RA with state caucus meetings in the hotel at 7 AM.
Carolyn Demory completed her final term as a Kansas commissioner on the NEA Resolutions Committee this summer.  She joined Alvin Peters in facilitating discussion in the Kansas delegation of proposed belief statements for NEA.
Alvin Peters will be joined by Greg White as our Kansas Resolutions Commissioners for 2005-2006.
Dorothy Rucker was one of many Kansas delegates who came prepared to celebrate the 4th of July - even if the whole day was spent in meetings with 10,000 of our closest friends!
Christy Levings, KNEA President spoke on behalf of our delegation about the school funding crisis in Kansas.  The KNEA leadership team provided moral support as delegates from across the country cheered the work of KNEA members.
Jim Armanderiz displays one of the thousands of posters carried by delegates as part of our "school funding rally" at the RA.
During the rally, 150+ KNEA members showed their support for colleagues in California, Michigan, and many other states around the country currently fighting school funding battles.
A contingent of RA delegates concluded the rally with a march from the convention hall to the LA office of Governor Schwarzenegger in response to his 2-billion dollar broken promise for school funding.
Part of the opening ceremonies at the RA included musical selections by the NEA Executive Committee - apparently, musical talent was an unwritten requirement for election because they were GOOD!
A familiar sight for delegates was NEA President Reg Weaver presiding over debate flanked by NEA General Counsel, Parliamentarian, and support staff.
Reg has focused our efforts on "Team NEA" as we continue the work to build great public schools for every child.
Trish Nicks, KNEA-SP President also represented our state well in meetings prior to the RA and during the convention.  Here, Trish awaited the opportunity to speak to the 10,000 delegates on behalf of the Kansas delegation.
Each state votes on secret ballot issues at a prescribed time during the meetings.  With all the delegates in the voting area, seats adorned with Kansas sunflowers made quite a visual impression.
Bruce and Diana Goeden oversee the logistics of the RA on behalf of the KNEA delegates.  From pre-arranging hotel, meeting rooms, group meals, and materials for conducting business, they were on call 24-7 for the entire week.
A highlight for KNEA and particularly delegates from Southeast UniServ was the selection of Linda Knoll as the recipient of the H. Councill Trenholm Award for Human and Civil Rights.  Pictured here are Peggy Shaverdi, Sherry Turnbull, Christy Levings, Linda Knoll, and Debbie Restivo
As the RA came to a conclusion, Blake West, Sherri Yourdon, and Christy Levings found even a concrete bench to be a welcome resting place.  As always, we are extremely proud of the hard work and commitment of our Kansas colleagues.  Thank you to each delegate from your KNEA officers!
