KNEA is the "go to" resource for professional development and school improvement!

Kansas NEA is committed to providing a highly skilled, competent, qualified and diverse teaching force. We work to make professional development ongoing and relevant to what teachers do on the job every day.

KNEA is also an excellent clearing house for resources on a vast number of subject areas from NEA and other organizations.

When teachers need it, KNEA's got it. For details, contact the KNEA Instructional Advocacy Office. Here is a short list.

  • KNEA's "Quality Schools Cadre" is a team of teachers trained to help a school build "professional learning communities" that can improve student learning. Members can contact KNEA about utilizing the cadre or how to become a part of this cadre.
  • KNEA developed a set of Quality School Standards - descriptors of a school that link factors of educator working conditions and student achievement. These standards have been used by bargaining teams to help guide priorities that can be justified based on "what's best for students", particularly when resources were scarce.
  • Locals in which students are taking courses online may use the NEA guide to standards for quality online high school courses.
  • KNEA provides the best information in the state regarding the requirements of NCLB, IDEA and other important issues. Our materials are frequently "borrowed" and used by administration and school boards!
  • KNEA has developed and offers a KSDE-approved training program for Professional Development Councils (PDC) - this training is required annually for every PDC in the state. Members may apply to KNEA to become part of the training cadre.
  • KNEA worked with KSDE to craft a HOUSSE for Highly Qualified status that is a model for many states in the country. The HOUSSE system developed protected veteran qualified teachers from threats to their licensure.
  • KNEA developed standards and training for teacher induction and mentoring programs. KNEA staff use these standards and work with districts to help them develop and implement programs to help new teachers succeed.
  • KNEA helps bargaining teams as they bargain professional development issues to ensure that those experiences are relevant, of high quality and worthwhile to our members.
  • The NEA Web site offers links to lesson plans and teaching aids that are available to members only (Teacher ToolKit).
  • Dealing with Difficult People is a training offered to members and locals in several ways - for some, the training has been used to help prepare for parent conferences while others have made the training part of an overall leadership skills development program.
