NEA Grants Available

Hurricane Relief: Help Educators and Schools in Need

After Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, NEA members rushed to help thousands of evacuated educators and students in the Gulf Coast. NEA's Hurricane Relief Fund is well on its way to its $1 million goal. To date, $850,000 has been collected and several hundred "adopters" have registered with NEA's Adopt a School program.

Given the extent of the storms' damage, requests for assistance have been tremendous. You can help support public school employees and schools by donating to the fund or adopting a school in need. Go to www.nea.org/disasterrelief for details.

Public school employees impacted by the hurricanes may apply for grants for housing, food, clothing, and other necessities through November 1 by e-mailing hurricanerelief@nea.org or calling toll-free 1-866-247-2239. After that date, please contact your state affiliate to see if other assistance is available.

The NEA Website features a bulletin board for affected school employees to list their needs and donors to match their contributions. Plus, an adopt-a-school section receives requests for schools who want to adopt an affected school. Working with state affiliates, NEA is matching these schools.

KNEA has sent over 50 boxes of books to Houston, Texas, for displaced children. If you’d like to donate books or educational materials, contact KNEA President Christy Levings at christy.levings@knea.org.
