Teachers Helping Teachers…

Help for Kids & Schools and Hurricane Relief

Hurricanes Katrina and Rita have impacted all of us in some way. Kansas NEA has been receiving numerous contacts from concerned members asking how they can help provide relief for hurricane victims. NEA has been working hard on an organized response to these disasters. Here’s what we’re doing…

  • We hope to raise $1,000,000 to support school employees and children who were impacted by the hurricane. Checks should be written to the NEA HIN Hurricane Relief Fund and mailed to KNEA at 715 West 10th Avenue, Topeka, KS 66612. Donations are tax deductible. Credit card capability is available on the NEA Web site: www.nea.org. NEA will distribute these funds to state affiliates to directly assist school employees and children. We will be flexible in getting help to those who need it in a timely manner.
  • On the NEA Website, look for a bulletin board for affected school employees to list their needs and donors to match their contributions.
  • KNEA has sent over 50 boxes of books to Houston, Texas, for displaced children. If you’d like to donate books or educational materials, contact KNEA President Christy Levings at christy.levings@knea.org.
  • An adopt-a-school Website is on www.nea.org to receive requests for schools who want to adopt an affected school. Working with state affiliates, we are matching these schools.
  • Remember to take care of our members and staff who are experiencing this event personally or with family as well as those who are watching this horrific event. They need to talk about this. They need comfort. Reach out and make sure your colleagues are okay.
  • Finally, NEA is deploying staff to the affected states as well as those who are receiving significant evacuees.

This is a multiple state disaster and NEA is glad to offer assistance processing the generosity of our members, leaders and staff.
