NEA Lawsuit

The National Education Association, nine school districts, Reading Education Association and nine state affiliates filed a lawsuit against U.S. Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings and the Department of Education concerning the so-called "No Child Left Behind" law.

"Kansas NEA is giving moral support to the national effort. We've been monitoring the situation and participating where appropriate," said KNEA President Christy Levings. "KNEA is not joining the lawsuit. Instead we are focusing our energies on the lawsuit to provide a solution for the long-term fully funding of Kansas public schools."

She said by filing the lawsuit NEA and Parents are saying "No More." The rationale includes:

  • Parents in local school districts are fed up with Washington imposing expensive rules and regulations on their children's classrooms.
  • The law requires Washington to pay for its education regulations - Washington is not honoring that promise.
  • That means taxpayers and parents' tax money is getting steered away form their children's classrooms toward bureaucracy and testing companies.
