NEA collects cash for hurricane Katrina kids

KNEA is sending 40 boxes of books to help with Hurricane Katrina relief efforts. Nearly 100,000 people displaced from Louisiana and Mississippi are being housed in Houston, Texas.

A large number of children displaced to the Houston area will be attending school and will need educational materials. “We hope this helps those who will be working with students. Classrooms and books provide safety and security and provide a semblance of normalcy,” said KNEA President Christy Levings. “Our homeless shelter outreach experiences show that it is important for kids to have books of their own as they begin the long recovery process.”

The books are part in support of local relief efforts and are part of KNEA’s Reading Circle Library. KNEA is also collecting money to be used to support schools and teachers. Levings noted that the Red Cross and other organizations encourage financial assistance only. Checks can be made out and sent to the KNEA Hurricane Katrina Relief Fund, c/o KNEA, 715 West 10th Avenue, Topeka, KS 66611.
