KNEA urges teachers to take KAN-TeLL online survey

Teachers and principals are invited to take an online survey that can impact how students learn.

Through the Kansas Teaching, Learning & Leadership online survey (KAN-TeLL), all school-based licensed educators have the opportunity to privately and anonymously provide input on issues critical to student learning.

The survey will ask about overall working conditions, time, leadership, facilities and resources, decision-making and professional development.

During the first week of January, 2008, educators will receive a letter containing a personal security code from Kansas Education Commissioner, Dr. Alexa Posny. Personal codes are by building, so staff within a building can exchange numbers, but they should not exchange letters between buildings.

Educators can take the online survey anytime between January 14 through February 15 , 2008 at www.kantell.org. The 15-20 minute survey is confidential and anonymous.

Questions and replacement codes can be obtained by calling the toll-free Help Line, 866-575-8010, or by sending an e-mail to  starting Jan. 14.

A working conditions data report will be available for the State of Kansas as a whole as well as every participating school and district with a 40 percent response rate. The 40 percent response threshold helps ensure the results are representative of the population of educators in the school. The minimum response rate also protects the anonymity of respondents.

Partners want 100% participation
Partners in this project are the KSDE, the State Board of Education, KNEA and USA.

Dr. Posny said she hopes this data will enhance school improvement planning, engage faculty conversation, partner with the community and lead to promising changes in district and state policies and programs.

"The educators of Kansas have the opportunity to lend their collective voice to a new and promising collaborative effort to enhance the education experience that all students deserve," Posny said. "Please join us in this important effort by completing the vital survey."

"It is KNEA's hope that KAN-TeLL will clarify the focus of public schools by determining what resources and supports teachers need to serve all students well," said KNEA President Blake West.

"We know that learning conditions in the classroom are teacher working conditions. We want to use the best possible data to improve learning conditions, enhance student achievement and keep excellent teachers in the profession in Kansas," he added

"This initiative will refocus much needed attention on how the conditions and climates of schools can better support effective leadership, encourage teacher retention and promote student learning needed for the 21st century," said Kansas State Board of Education President Bill Wagnon.

This is the first time building principals will be surveyed about their working conditions. The leadership survey is also anonymous.

"Recent research shows that the design, leadership and culture of schools have a direct influence on student learning and teacher retention," said United School Administrators of Kansas President Rob Balsters. "This is an excellent opportunity to learn how leadership can enhance student learning."

"I encourage all principals and teachers to participate in this survey and embrace this opportunity to add their voice to our collaborative efforts to make Kansas a model of high quality education," Dr. Posny said.
