Proud to be Kansas NEA

by Blake West, Kansas NEA President
In Kansas, 25,000 individuals proudly say, "We are the Kansas NEA and we make public schools great for every child. Our focus is highly trained, caring and qualified teachers. We speak up for high standards and highly accomplished teachers. We believe that our communities take pride in that work, too."

We work to provide professional development for teachers.  We assist teachers in pursuit of National Board Certification, we advocate for quality induction and mentoring for new teachers and for peer review to ensure that every student has a caring, qualified teacher.  Kansas NEA also has led the charge to join with the Partnership for 21st Century Skills to ensure all children receive a quality 21st century education.

We are also guilty, though, of advocating to raise Kansas teacher salaries to the national average - a fact that has apparently painted a target on these dedicated individuals who have made teaching their calling in life.

This week, a private "gun for hire" spent more than $1 million to defame the professional associations that advocate for children, teachers and support professionals across the country.

It is a shame this organization, with its anti-public school backers, are spending all this money to smear teachers, while teachers pay for school supplies out of their own pockets. Maybe teachers should feel honored to be attacked by a group that has also campaigned against higher minimum wages, Mothers Against Drunk Driving, the Surgeon General of the United States, and the Americans with Disabilities Act.

If you want to know more about what this teacher's union is doing, review our Web site here or contact us. You'll read about our work to attract and retain good people into the teaching profession, to provide grants to enhance teaching and learning and to promote the quality education students are receiving in Kansas public schools .
