KNEA Members Converge on Nation's Capital

We’re Leading with Courage and Commitment
Delegates completed an energetic, hopeful RA July 6 with action on New Business Items and Resolutions, tributes to outgoing President Reg Weaver, and speeches from President-Elect Dennis Van Roekel, the newly elected Executive Committee members, and 2008 Teacher of the Year Michael Geisen.

Nearly 9,000 delegates hit the ground running in the nation’s capital at the 2008Representative Assembly (RA). It was, and is, a historic political season for NEA members, their schools and their students. Political activism took center stage at the 87th RA  as more than 9,000 NEA members rally to fight for public education in this critical election year. Among them, 150 Kansas teachers.

The impending reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act—the so-called No Child Left Behind law (NCLB)—makes this fall's election crucial to NEA members. The law stays in effect until Congress and a new President change it, and campaign season "is the best time to get their ear," says former NEA President Reg Weaver. "Congress and the President got the law wrong in 2002, and they need to tell us what they'll do in 2008 to get the one-size-fits-all NCLB vise off our schools and to get real about providing great public schools for every child."

Before the RA opened, delegates tackled a range of issues and activities during the Joint Conference on the Concerns of Minorities and Women, the NEA-Retired Conference and the NEA Student Program meeting and Outreach to Teach  event.
