Important changes for new teacher licenses

Many changes have occurred with the KPA, the Kansas Performance Assessment

The following changes for new teachers are effective at the beginning this school year:

  • The KPA in its current format will be administered as part of teacher preparation programs.
  • A new performance assessment will be developed and should be ready for implementation July, 2009.
  • Any person with a Conditional or Initial License (newly issued licenses) can upgrade to a Professional License by documenting completion of a year-long, district-administered induction and mentoring program.  Any year-long program will count as long as the person participating is holding a Conditional License.  This is being called the Transitional Performance Assessment and it will be in place until the new performance assessment is approved by the State Board.

KPAs that were submitted in June are being scored this week, so score reports should be out by the end of July, accompanied by information on how to apply for the Professional License.  No more KPAs will be accepted for scoring – only the Transitional Performance Assessment option is available.

KNEA members who have additional questions can contact Instructional Advocacy Director Peg Dunlap .
