Wichita teacher honored for teaching excellence

United Teachers of Wichita member Stacie Valdez will represent Kansas for the NEA Foundation Award for Teaching Excellence, which recognizes excellence in teaching and advocacy for the profession and includes a $25,000 grant. The finalists are chosen based on their outstanding instructional expertise, creativity and innovation, attention to diversity and individual student needs, learning styles and leadership experiences.

Ms. Valdez is an Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) Center consultant. AVID is a college preparatory program for the non-traditional students - those who have not considered college because of race, poverty or language and whose parents never attended college. She works with students during an elective class to guide them in developing time-management and test-taking skills as well as productive study habits. 

She is a nationally board certified teacher, Master Teacher and a member of the 2008 Kansas Teacher of the Year team. Ms. Valdez is an avid fan of teaching and learning, serving as a mentor for new teachers and at adjunct professor at Wichita State University.

Valdez was honored for teaching excellence during the Kansas NEA Representative Assembly.
