Achievement Gaps

KNEA believes that all students can learn at high levels. That belief has led to many KNEA initiatives that are designed to improve the quality of Kansas public schools and strengthen the profession of teaching.

The achievement gaps are very real – but not inevitable. We offer this wealth of information and strategies to foster a deep understanding of this critical issue. Among the antecedents of student success are a sincere expectation on the part of the adults that every child will learn at a high level, that the traditional excuses will be swept off the table, and that assessments will be used to guide the next lesson as well as evaluate the previous one.

KNEA has compiled a series of links regarding one of the most critical issues confronting educators today: the shameful gaps in achievement levels that are prevalent - but far from uniform - in our schools. Those exceptions are the very beacons that will guide us to better practices and policies, changes that will be critical if public education is to maintain viability with parents and the public in the years to come. These changes are even more crucial if public education is to serve the needs of all of our students.
