Some more tips to help you start your school year right!

  • Visit your classroom early to set up furniture, bulletin boards, etc.
  • Read district and building handbooks
  • Read curriculum guide/outcomes
  • Find out the first day schedule and procedures
  • Meet key staff; greet newcomers: principal, secretary, custodian
  • Know who your KNEA building representative and officers are
  • Create lesson plans for the first week
  • Create preliminary seating charts if practical
  • Consider name tags for each desk (elementary)
  • Find out procedures for obtaining textbooks and other instructional materials/resources
  • Find out what (new) resources are available: school professional library, district resources, KNEA, educational service centers, etc.
  • Find out what technological resources are available and how you'll be expected to use them
  • Determine your beginning class routine: roll call, absent, tardy, etc.
  • Room expectations: designated place for homework, supplies, out-of-seat policies, etc.
  • Set up independent work standards
  • Decide how to communicate about expectations to parents and/or students
  • Establish instructional activities and routines
  • Ending class routines: turning in assignments, clearing desks
  • Other procedures: fire drills, tornado drills, etc.
  • Work requirements and standards: heading papers, incomplete work, due dates
  • Communicating assignments (written, oral)
  • Student work: obtaining assignments when absent, due dates, late work
  • Homework: schedule and expectations
  • Grading procedures: extra credit options
  • Activities for students who have finished their work
  • Role of other adults in the room (paras, parents, etc.)
