Online Resources

All Academic Areas

For a listing of more than 5,000 educational resources for all academic subjects, including free, inexpensive and valuable resources for teachers, check out www.reacheverychild.com . Designed to help teachers and parents get information and materials, the site provides mailing addresses, phone numbers, e-mail addresses and links to entities offering resources for teachers, parents and students. Plus there are sample lesson plans to show teachers how they can use these resources in the classroom and an e-mail link with a nationally recognized educator for ideas and feedback.


At-risk students

For up-to-date statistics on troubling issues facing young people and society today, check out the Reality Clock TM, an informational feature on the Bureau for At-Risk Youth's website (http://www.at-risk.com). The statistics cover such topics as the number of children killed by handguns, the number of babies born to unwed teenagers, the number of students assaulted, the number of deaths resulting from smoking, and other issues.

Diversity

Building Chicano/a Latina/o Communities through Networking (http://www.chicano.ucla.edu/) includes information on the community, research, diversity, education, and statistics related to Hispanic students and their families.

The Journal of Educational Issues for Language Minority Students (http://www.ncbe.gwu.edu/miscpubs//jeilms) includes the full text of articles from the publication since spring 1994 on its web site.

The Latin American Network Information Center (http://lanic.utexas.edu/) Includes Information on elementary and secondary education, higher education, anthropology, research institutions, sociology, and statistics.


Economics

The Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia (http://www.phil.frb.org) provides a wide range of regional and national economic data, including information on currency, on Its website. Educational technology

Parents' Guide to the Internet is a new U.S. Educational Department guide to help parents understand the Internet and get more involved with promoting technology In schools. "Technology @ your fingertips ", a report by the U.S. Department of Education's National Center of Education Statistics (NCES), describes the process of determining the best possible technology solutions for your school. The report suggests steps to take to Identify technology needs, to consider options, to acquire the technology, and to Implement solutions. The report Includes Information about computer hardware, software, networking, and budgetary and human resource concerns relating to use of computer and networking technology for providing instruction to students, managing activities related to Instruction, and automating and streamlining day-to-day operations. Health

The National Education Association Health Information Network's website (http://www.nea.org/hin/) offers a variety of health information resources and features designed specifically for NEA members. Issues such as HIV/AIDS education, women's health, and environmental health are covered. The network also offers an Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) in Schools Bulletin Board where members can discuss school air quality issues (http://www.nea.org/health).


Interdisciplinary

A&E Network has expanded its Biography (R) database (http://www.biography.com) to 22,000 names. The database offers biographical summaries of prominent people from antiquity to the present. There Is no charge for access to the database.

The Public Broadcasting Service has PBS TeacherSource (http://www.pbs.org/teachersource), an online service designed to help K-12 teachers use PBS's award-winning television and online programming in the classroom. The area includes information on teacher resources, off-air recording rights, PBS education services, teaching tools for using technology in the classroom, and other Web sites that can bolster classroom resources.

The Pleasant Company for American Girls website (http://www.americangirl.com) offers interactive features for girls including a column offering daily activities, an interactive advice column, nonfiction features, in formation on significant historical events for girls and women on specific days, and Information about fictional characters from specific times In U.S. history. The area also links to such historic sites as Colonial Williamsburg, the Lower East Side Tenement Museum, and African American Heroes to encourage girls' interest in history and their use of the World Wide Web to explore history.


New Teacher Resources

This site, by the veteran teachers of Inspiring Teachers publishing group in Dallas, Texas, offers several links: (1) "Ask A Mentor" where you can e-mail questions or concerns to a veteran teacher, (2) "Tips for New Teachers" (click "archives") and (3) top ten things to do before schools starts. Be sure to check out the Beginning Teachers Message Board where you can ask for or offer advice.

Beginning teachers will definitely want to check out the "Mentor Support Center " from teachers.net. This feature (click "Chat board") brings together educators in category-specific chats, such as the chat board for beginning teachers. The site also includes lesson plans, live meetings, a bookshelf with a list of useful resources and a newsletter.

The U.S. Department of Education offers this free online book "What to Expect Your First Year of Teaching " (in PDF format, requiring an Acrobat reader): a compilation of award-winning first-year teacher experiences, challenges and successes. It includes tips on how to have a successful first year, advice form veteran teachers, and a discussion about the things for which no training could have prepared new teachers.


Parental involvement

The U.S. Department of Education's National Center for Education Statistics has released Parent Involvement In Children's Education: Efforts by Public Elementary Schools , which can be accessed at (http://nces.ed.gov/pubsearch/pubsinfo.asp?pubid=98032). The report provides information on ways schools are engaging parents in their children's education and the extent to which parents are responding to the opportunities schools provide. Professional Development Sites

Explore the rest of the site for more. ASCD is an excellent source of current research and trends in education. The site has members-only sections, and you can subscribe to print items as well.


Safety

The Federal Emergency Management Agency uses games, student artwork, activities, and graphics to deliver the message of disaster preparedness on Its new FEMA for Kids website (http://www.fema.gov/kids). The interactive page for students in preschool through eighth grade is designed to support classroom-wide use. It includes sections that show hazards possible In each state, current disasters, how to prepare for disaster, how to ensure safety of pets, what feelings children may experience after going through a disaster, information on natural disasters, list teacher re sources, as well as post artwork, essays, and poems by students who have lived through disasters.

Urban education

The Urban and Minority Education Web - IUME - (http://iume.tc.columbia.edu/) is dedicated to urban and minority students, their families, and urban educators.
